Pic Pick of The Century: An Homage to Walter Dean Myers

Image of Walter Dean Myers Harlem, Looking like me, and Brown angels

It is with sad news that I write here today,
a very short poem of a great writer that has just gone away.
A man who's presence is no longer here,
But whose words and spirit would remain and never disappear.
You opened the door- made it possible for us to have a voice,
in children's books that were dominated without too much choice.
Mr. Myers your books have inspired more than one or two,
who have dreams of being as great as you.

In this sad day for children's literature please take time to remember Walter Dean Myers and read one of the titles that is close your heart.

  • Harlem - a poem that illustrates the beauty and importance of harlem.
  • Looking Like Me - a rhyming poem that celebrates a child's individuality and creativity.
  • Brown Angels - a series of portraits of african american children and poems inspired by them.
