Free Programs at New Dorp Library: April 2013


Spring is in the air! I know this because my nose reminds me all day long! But you know what really takes away the sinus pressure? A trip to my local library! Visit and join one of these great programs that will make you forget about all that pollen!

We have all these great special programs available this month; Rainforest Connections, Dia Del Los Ninos, An Earth Day Celebration and A poetry workshop for children!

Show those allergies who's the boss, and get out and have some fun at New Dorp Library!

For Children

Picture Book Time
For ages 3 and up
Enjoy hearing books read aloud, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. April 3, 10, 17 & 24
No preregistration is needed.

Toddler Rhyme Time
For ages 18 – 30 months and caregiver
Bring your toddler to an interactive program featuring books, rhymes, and songs.
Friday, April 5, at 10:30 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

Family Movies
Free family movies for all ages. Both shown on a Saturday, at 2:00 p.m.
"Pirates" on 4/6 and "Pocahontas" on 4/13. Get a coloring sheet too!

Preschool Program
For ages 2 ½ - 5 years and caregiver
Enjoy books, finger plays, action rhymes and coloring.
Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00 a.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

Poetry Writing Workshop
For ages 6 to 12 years
Listen to poetry from our books, & write your own!
Thursday, April 11, at 4:00 p.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

"Green Scene" - Celebrate our Earth!
For ages 5 – 12 years
Enjoy celebrating our Earth with activities & a craft.
Thursday, April 25, at 4:00 p.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before.

Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros – Children’s Day/Book Day
For ages 4 – 12 years
Come join our interactive bilingual Spanish/English activities & craft!
Tuesday, April 30, 4:00 p.m.
Preregistration is required and will start 1 week before program.

Free Math & Reading Tutoring
Math tutoring: for children Pre-K to 8th grade
Reading tutoring: for children Pre-K to 3rd grade.
Presented by Staten Island Technical volunteers and Stuyvesant High School volunteers
Tuesdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., & 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rainforest Connections
Join super hero Captain Cocoa on an adventure to save the rainforest and discover along the way that it might be the average person who can really save the day. Presented by the Wildlife Theater from the Central Park Zoo. Recommended for children ages 4 to 10 years old. Ages: 3-12 years April 4th at 4:00pm

For Teens:

Teen Café Remixed
April 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29
2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Come join us for fun in the community room. Play your favorite games on the PS3 and the Wii. Come hang out with your friends! You can bring your snacks, soda, coffee, homework, iPod. Check out a laptop and browse the internet! For ages 12-18.

Teen Club
April 4/3, 4/17
2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Your two favorite programs – Teen Art & Anime Club have combined !! Talk Anime and Draw Manga or Talk Manga and don’t draw Anime. It’s up to you. For ages 12 to 18.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)
April 4/5
2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Join our Teen Advisory Group and get hands on experience volunteering for the Library.
Earn Community Service hours by attending our monthly meetings and giving us your input! What's happening in your world? What’s the hottest book, movie, or cd right now? What programs does the library need?
This is a great way to meet new friends and really get involved in what goes on here at the New Dorp Library.
For ages 12-18.

For Adults:

Stay Well Exercise Program
Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.
The Stay Well exercise program is geared for all seniors, ranging from the fit to those with disabilities. The curriculum includes aerobic exercises as well as routines designed to enhance balance, build muscle strength and aid in the performance of the tasks associated with daily living. Classes end with stress reduction exercises. Classes normally run 40 - 50 minutes and are held once a week.

Knitting and Crochet Club
Saturdays, April 6 and 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. - noon
Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, small scissors, and the pattern you want to work on.

Knitting Group (in Spanish)
Mondays, April 8 and 15, 2013 at 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Participants must supply their own yarn, needles, and hooks.

Introduction to Email
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Email skills for Adults. Registration starts one week before the class.

Zumba Workout
Thursdays, April 11 and 25, 2013 at 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Zumba is a fusion of Latin & international music combined with dance fitness moves. Come in sneakers and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle.
