Kelly Link’s Pretty Monsters is a collection of beautiful short stories ranging from fanciful to scary horror. To give you an idea of what the stories are like I'll just tell you about the first one I read.  It’s about a teenage boy who leaves a collection of his poetry in the coffin of his dead girlfriend.  After a few months, he decides that he wants his poetry back and has to dig it up.  The story is called "The Wrong Grave" so you can only imagine what happens next.

I think short stories are often overlooked by a lot of readers and it really is a shame. I love a great story that can easily be wrapped up in one train ride. Pretty Monsters can be found in the general fiction but maybe the next time you come to the library you can stop in the non-fiction and look for the call number 808. 808 isn’t just a drum machine made famous by the likes of Kanye West and Big Boi, its also home to the library’s collection of bite sized fiction, perfect for hungry readers that just can’t commit to just one story.

I've been booktalking this title at schools for a while now, and I always tell the kids about "The Wrong Grave" story. And then that book is always one of our most requested titles for weeks afterwards!
