Media artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese present and discuss their site-specific installation “Free Speech Zone,” followed by authors reading passages from works of their own which have been challenged or banned including: Judy Blume, Deborah Hautzig, Robert Lipsyte, Walter Dean Mayers, Phyllis Naylor, Peter Sis and Rita Williams-Garcia.
The installation, which was exhibited in Donnell Library Center’s display windows from September 5 to October 2, 2005, explored the impact of censorship and underlines the importance of libraries. The installation took its title from the current practice of restricting the exercise of First Amendment rights into areas called “free speech zones.”
The artists have collaborated for more than 20 years on videos, interactive installations, limited edition multiples and artists books. Their work dissects media through the manipulation of images and audio from print, television, the Internet and radio. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, Art Matters, Inc., the Puffin Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
