Art and Architecture: Dear Data | Giorgia Lupi and Debbie Millman | Design and Style Series Event

Giorgia Lupi gives a visual presentation on a yearlong collaborative exchange with Stefanie Posavec, that is featured in the new book Dear Data. Following the presentation, Giorgia is joined by the legendary designer and educator Debbie Millman for a discussion delving further into the project and its impact on Giorgia's and Stefanie’s personal and professional lives.
Providing insight into the project and their approach to data visualization, Dear Data explores what can be learned from data derived from our everyday lives. Equal parts mail art, data visualization, and affectionate correspondence, Dear Data celebrates “the infinitesimal, incomplete, imperfect, yet exquisitely human details of life” in the words of Maria Popova who introduces this charming and graphically powerful book.
For one year, Girogia Lupi, an Italian living in New York, and Stefanie Posavec, an American living in London, mapped the particulars of their daily lives as a series of hand-drawn postcards which they exchanged via mail weekly. Small portraits as full of emotion as they are data, Dear Data reproduces in detail the full year’s set of cards (fronts and backs) providing a remarkable portrait of two artists connected by their attention to the details of their lives—such as their complaints, distractions, phone addiction, physical contact, and desires—that illuminate the lives of two remarkable women, and inspire us to map our own lives, including specific suggestions of data to draw and how.

Giorgia Lupi is an award-winning information designer and researcher, she is co-founder and design director at Accurat a data-driven design firm with offices in Milan and New York. Her work in information visualization frequently crosses the divide between digital and print, exploring visual models and metaphors to represent dense and rich data-driven stories. Giorgia received her M-Arch at FAF in Ferrara and she then earned a PhD in Design at Politecnico di Milano in 2014. Her design work has been featured on The New York Times, Wired, the Guardian, Popular Science, Time Magazine, The Washington Post, Forbes, and other major publications. Her work has been exhibited at the New York Hall of Science, The Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Milano Design Week and Somerset House in London.
Debbie Millman is a designer, author, educator and strategist. She is President of the design division at Sterling Brands, where she has worked on the redesign of over 200 global brands, including projects with P&G, Colgate, Nestle, Kraft and Pepsi. Debbie is also Co-Founder and Chair of the world’s first Masters in Branding Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She is President Emeritus of AIGA, the largest professional association for design in the world and a contributing editor at Print Magazine. In 2005, she began hosting, “Design Matters,” the first podcast about design on the Internet. In 2011, the show was awarded a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award. She is the author of six books on design and branding including two collections of interviews that have extended the ethos and editorial vision of Design Matters to the printed page: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. Both books have been published in over 10 languages. Her visual essays have been on display at the Chicago Design Museum and Anderson University in South Carolina.
