Young Lions Benefit Party
The 2012 Young Lions Benefit Party has been canceled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Please read this letter from NYPL President Anthony Marx:
Dear Young Lions Benefit Party supporter:
On behalf of our Young Lions Benefit Party Co-Chairs - Emma Bloomberg, Nick Brown, Sloane Crosley, Jillian Demling, Michael Hess, Andrea Olshan, and Jessie Tisch - I write to let you know that because of circumstances surrounding Hurricane Sandy we have decided to cancel our Young Lions Benefit Party scheduled for this Monday, November 5.
The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on 42nd Street has been without power since the hurricane and as of this moment we don't know when it will be restored. Without power, we have not been able to make preparations for the evening, and at this point we simply can't be sure that the building will be safe and ready on Monday to accommodate guests.
While the Co-Chairs and I regret that we can't give you the wonderful evening we promised, we look forward to inviting you back to the Library for a special event already being planned. More importantly, we want you to know how grateful we are for your support. It is deeply needed and appreciated by the millions of New Yorkers and people around the world who depend on this great Library.
In the wake of such a far-reaching disaster, we are reminded of just how much New Yorkers do depend on us. It is an inspiring sight to see 60 of our 90 branches already open to the public - even before the subways and schools are fully up and running. All hands are on-deck as staff from across the Library system - from maintenance workers to curators to clerks - are volunteering to "re-deploy" in order to ensure that libraries are accommodating the influx of patrons looking for information, shelter, and solace. Further, with so many New Yorkers in need right now, we are also working with food distribution organizations to make sure that the food that would have been used for the event is put to good use.
In the weeks and months ahead, thousands of New Yorkers will be seeking to restore order to their lives, and for some of them the library will be an indispensable resource. Your support of the Young Lions Benefit Party - and of The New York Public Library - makes this possible.
Thank you again for your generous support. I look forward to welcoming you to the Library very soon.
Yours,
Tony
