Included in this searchable database are programs which offer business advice, loans, grants, location assistance, and a wide range of other services for small businesses throughout the city — often at no cost or for a low fee.
Brooklyn College Continuing Education offers a wide variety of courses 3 semesters a year - Spring, Summer,and Fall. Programs are available to adults and to young persons through the Young Person's Academy . Courses offered include: Accounting/Bookkeeping, Business, College Prep, Computer Technology and many on-line courses, English as a Second Language, Test Prep and College Preparatory courses, Health Care, Day Care, Child Care, Keyboarding skills, Paralegal and legal secretarial courses and Real Estate Certificate Programs. The Continuing Ed program also offers a Renal Dialysis Technician Training Program and GED courses. Course fees vary. Partnerships and individuals/sole proprietorships doing business under a name other than their own need a Doing Business As (DBA) Business Certificate. File a Business Certificate form with the Count Clerk's Office in the borough where your business is located.
The Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] is a 32 year old private, not-for-profit organization. As a multi-service agency working with government agencies, educational institutions, and the private sector, BEDC offers comprehensive business consulting and economic development services. BEDC offers technical assistance, financial assistance, location assistance, and entrepreneur training programs for start-up and early-stage entrepreneurs.
The Brooklyn (Kings County) Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s (BHCC) main focuses are (but not limited to): their Business Incubator Program, which assists aspiring entrepreneurs in getting started by providing extensive and thorough education to those who wish to become small business owners; processing loans as Technical Assistance Providers for the US Small Business Administration (SBA); assisting with Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) certification as an affiliate for the NYC Department of Small Business Services and hosting Educational/Networking seminars for new/ existing business owners. Services are available in English and in Spanish.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a 300-acre 3.5 million square foot industrial park on the waterfront, currently housing aound 250 small and medium-sized businesses. It offers reasonable rents for prime city real estate ranging from $8 to $20 a square foot, in spaces from 500 to 100,000 square feet. Available spaces are in well-maintained, single and multi-storied buildings with elevator accessibility. Benefits include: self-contained business community with 24-hour security; NY State Empire Zone tax abatements; and an Employment Center to help business find qualified employees.
Workforce1 Career Centers are a one-stop shop for employers and jobseekers. Services to businesses may include human resources consulting, job-candidate screening and customized training for employees. For jobseekers services include resume and interview preparation, job-search coaching and access to educational and training opportunities. Build Now-NY is an initiative designed to give New York State an edge in pre-permitting sites. Build Now-NY is creating an inventory of locations for a wide range of other business profiles, making them ready for development when the opportunity arises and even creating opportunity. Build Now-NY site profiles include high technology manufacturing; warehouse/distribution/e-commerce centers; and multi-tenant business and technology parks.
BCNA, which receives funding through a variety of private and government sources, helps its clients and workshop attendees: obtain microloans to start or expand a business; learn business management skills; understand personal finance and everyday cash management; establish and contribute to a savings account; and purchase a first home or apartment with the help of special government programs. BCNA staff provides services in a variety of languages including: Vietnamese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, Hindi, African dialects of Bassa & Kru, French & Creole, and Tibetan & Nepali. The Business Information Center [BIC] provides the latest high-tech hardware, software, and telecommunications to help start-up and expanding businesses. The Business Initiative Corporation of New York[BIC] administers the SBA 504 Loan Program. BIC works with the SBA and with private lenders to provide financing to small businesses, focusing on all industries and sectors comprising the NYS economy - industrial, commercial, manufacturers, and service industries. For profit organizations, partnerships, proprietorships, and LLC's are eligible. Minimum loan amount is $50,000; maximum is $5,000,000 - $5.5 million in priority areas.
