    Climatology - Search Steps

    Sample Question:
How can I find information on climatic phenomena?

    Answer:
To find information at the Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL), use the following steps:

Step 1: Consult dictionaries and encyclopedias in the open-shelf reference collection.
Refer to the climatology reference sources list. These resources can be found in the open-shelf reference collection on the lower level of SIBL.

Step 2: Search the NYPL catalogs for books on your topic.
Search the catalog for both high school and undergraduate-level materials that circulate, and for graduate level books for reference use only. Check the location of items found to make sure they are either in SIBL's circulating collection (street level), or its reference collection (lower level). Relevant subject headings are climatology and meteorology, but also search under the names of particular phenomena, i.e. hurricanes.

Step 3: Search for articles using our databases.
Select from the list of indexes and abstracts. Search for information by keyword or subject term to find article citations. Check journal titles in the above mentioned catalogs for the library's holdings if articles are not available full-text via the databases. Talk to a librarian if you are unable to locate a journal.

    For additional information:
    1. Speak to a librarian at the McGraw Information Services Center on the lower level of the library.
    2. Register for free classes on searching the library's online catalogs and on finding articles.
    3. Consult Web sites on climatology.

  • Natural History

This guide is an introduction to some of the natural history resources available in The New York Public Library, especially in the General Research Division. Included within this wide-ranging subject area are zoology, botany, horticulture, gardening and garden design, "man and nature," and the humanistic and philosophical aspects of conservation and ecology.

    Using the Catalogs

General instructions for locating materials are given in Research Guide No. 1, "How Do I Find A Book"; The following information is specific to the topic at hand.

If the open shelf materials from the Main Reading Room collections listed in this guide do not provide enough information, you may find additional sources by consulting the catalogs in the Public Catalog Room.

Typical natural history subject headings (many with subdivisions) that may be searched directly in CATNYP are:

    Amphibians Fishes Mammal
    Animal Flowers Mammals
    Animals Grasses Moths
    Bird Herbs Reptiles
    Birds Insect Roses
    Botany Insects Trees
    Butterflies Invertebrates Zoology
    Fish Lepidoptera

The four-volume set of Library of Congress Subject Headings, found near the CATNYP terminals, can be consulted for further details.

The subject entries in the Dictionary Catalog often vary from those in CATNYP; consult a librarian if problems are encountered.

    General Works

Illustrated encyclopedias, both general and scientific, are obvious and often excellent sources of information about animals and plants. These can often supply all information needed, or serve as a starting point for further research.

    Collier's encyclopedia. 24 vols. (London: New York: Collier, c1989) *R-*AK 89-1668.

Encyclopaedia Britannica. 11th ed. 29 vols. (New York: EB, 1911). *R-*AL. Leading zoologists and botanists of the period prepared exhaustive, lavishly illustrated articles for the classic scholarly edition of EB. It remains a valuable tool for the serious researcher.

    Illustrations And Indexes

The Research Libraries' enormous holdings of pre-1900 lavishly illustrated zoologies and botanies are shelved in the Central and Annex stacks, the Rare Books Division, and other special collections. Because these primary sources are often extremely fragile, as well as rare and valuable, it is suggested that facsimile editions and sources containing reproductions and modern illustrations be consulted first.
