Online Catalog Center and The B. Altman Delivery Desk
The
Online Catalog Center on the Lower Level is the electronic gateway to the
vast collections of The New York Public Library. Users search CATNYP, the
computerized public catalog of The New York Public Library's Research Libraries,
as well as LEO, the computerized catalog of The Branch Libraries, and many
other electronic resources.
The B. Altman Delivery Desk is the long, curved desk which serves as the delivery
area for user-requested material brought down from the closed stacks. Requests
are sent by pneumatic tubes to the appropriate stack level and delivered by
one of the four elevators designed to hold a book truck. The time for an elevator
to travel from the fifth stack level to the Delivery Desk is 34.5 seconds.
The B. Altman Delivery Desk has been made possible by a generous gift from
the Altman Foundation.
There are 31.2 miles of closed stack shelves holding 1.2 million volumes of
research material on SIBL's upper floors.
