Real Estate Resources

SIBL has a variety of resources for information about the real estate industry in general, and New York City property and buildings. Find books and journals in the Research collections (lower level at SIBL) and search the online catalog CATNYP for onsite use. Find books to borrow in the Cullman Reading Room, by searching LEO, the Branch Libraries catalog. The Library licenses several real estate information databases for onsite use only, while many general business databases are made accessible to remote users with a library card.

 

Online database for New York City building/ property information

Mighty Map  Front page offers information on recent property sales. (Professional edition is accessible onsite at SIBL through subscription. Ask a staff person to log in). Search by address, intersection, borough and block level, or locate a property on the map locator. Select and email site reports on NYC buildings and property including owners, tax liens, auctions, foreclosure sales, zoning, land use, traffic counts, subway locations, lis pendens, building permits, tax values and comparables. Includes data on building residents and businesses. Comps (deed transactions) are updated monthly.

Sanborn Building and Property Atlas of Brooklyn, Queens Staten Island, and other real property maps are available in print (and microform) in the Map Division, at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library.

Online sources for historical property research

For NYC, New Jersey and Connecticut Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970.
Access to large-scale historical maps for towns and cities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. (Proquest.) Sanborn fire insurance maps are valuable historical tools for urban specialists, architects, geographers, planners, environmentalists and anyone who wants to learn about the history, growth, and development of American cities, towns, and neighborhoods. (Accessible onsite at SIBL and in the Map Division, Humanities and Social Sciences Library)

Photographic views of New York City

NYPL Digital Gallery. More than 54,000 New York City archival photographs (and their captioned versos) from the 1870s-1970s arranged by borough and street; the majority are exterior building views and neighborhood scenes from the 1910s-1940s.
