Industry Publications
The news media is often the most easily accessible sources of information about a company. The "buzz" -- or lack thereof -- that a company generates in its industry will be reflected in press releases and news and feature articles in the magazines, newspapers, periodicals, and journals that cover the industry. Mergers and acquisitions, changes in corporate structure or personnel, innovations in products and services offered -- all such activities are newsworthy events for a company, and most will be reported on somewhere and may prove valuable to your research.

Bill Gates at a Special Libraries Association meeting said that the e-version of a publication is useful for a current quick skim and for noting longer articles which are best read in print. |

What are some types of industry publications?
Publications about business and industry abound, both in print and
electronic formats. Such publications may be produced by companies themselves, by industry associations, or by commercial news organizations. While the allure of electronic publications and "new media" is strong, the portable nature of print can give "old" media an advantage when you're on the go: Nothing beats a newspaper or magazine on a crowded bus, train, or plane.
Industry publications fall, with some overlap, into four broad categories
-- general news resources, business publications, trade journals, and
company or industry publications.
General News Resources
The business pages of most newspapers and online news resources cover broad industry trends, as well as the economic and political trends that affect business. These resources may cover specific geographic locations, or have a broader scope.
Business publications
Business publications have a broad point of view and provide general business news and coverage of the general economic and political climate. Such publications are available at newsstands, in most libraries, and online.
Trade Journals
These industry specific publications are produced by industry and commercial publishers and include news articles, features, and newsletters. They are generally available by subscription, although some of the more popular ones may be available on newsstands.
Company or Industry Publications
Information produced by a specific company may be distributed more widely on request.
