US Patents
US Utility Patents
SIBL has a complete collection of US utility patents on microfilm, from 1790
to the present. The microfilm arrives approximately six weeks after the patents
are granted. SIBL also has US patents on CD-ROM beginning with those issued
in 1994.
US Design Patents
SIBL has a complete collection of US design patents on microfilm, beginning
with No. 1, issued in 1842, to the present. The microfilm arrives approximately
six weeks after the patents are granted.
US Plant Patents
SIBL has US plant patents, both in print and in microfilm formats. The microfilm
copy is complete, beginning with No. P1, issued in 1931, to the present.
In print, SIBL has No. P1 to P4000, and P6060 to the present. Both are in
full color. The microfilm copy is readily available, while the paper copy
must be specially requested.
US Reissued Patents
SIBL has a complete collection of reissue patents, beginning with No. R1, issued
in 1973, on microfilm. Reissue patents are included on the CDR File/Patent
Status File microfilm reels.
US Statutory Invention Registrations and Defensive Publications
SIBL has Defensive Publications from 1975 beginning with No. T930,001, to 1986.
This series was then renamed Statutory Invention Registrations, which SIBL
has No. H1, issued in 1986, to the present.
US Patent Reexamination Certificates
SIBL has a complete collection of Reexamination Certificates from No. B1, issued
in 1981, to the present. This series is included on the CDR File/Patent Status
File microfilm reels.
Patent Indexes
The Official Gazette of the US Patent and Trademark Office: Patents
This weekly publication lists all the patents registered in a given week, arranged
by patent number, providing bibliographic information -- title, inventor
name(s), assignee -- a representative drawing, and an exemplary claim describing
what the invention does. It lists that week's notices concerning regulations,
reexaminations, and expirations, and it provides an alphabetical index of
that week's inventors and assignees and a list of patent numbers by class/subclass.
The print copy of the Official Gazette arrives weekly, approximately a week
and a half after the date of publication. SIBL has the Official Gazette from
1872 to the present.
Index of Patents
SIBL has this annual from 1872 to the present. This title has been published
under various names such as Annual Report of the Commissioner of Patents
and General Index of the Official Gazette. The Index to Patents lists patents
by inventor and assignee name and by general subject. It provides the patent
number, registration date, and the volume and page number where it can be
found in the Official Gazette.
Early Unnumbered United States Patents, 1790 to 1836
This one volume index is the specially prepared companion to the microfilm
copies of the U.S.'s early, unnumbered patents (i.e., those that were issued
from 1790 to 1836). It lists these earliest patents alphabetically by invention
title, with in the patent class alphabetically by inventor's last name by
issue date These lists give the specific microfilm reel number where the
full text, specifications, and drawings are located. These microfilm reels
are located in SIBL's Microform Reading Room are part of the US Utility Patents
series.
Index of Patents: 1790 to 1873
This 3 volume set lists all patents granted from 1790 to 1873 alphabetically
by the subject of the patent. It gives inventor's names, their residences,
the registration date, and the patent number for those granted after 1836.
There is no listing by inventor name or registration date in this set.
Digest of Patents: 1790 to 1839
Digest of Patents: 1839 to 1841
List of Patents: 1790 to 1836
List of Patents: 1790 to 1847
These four volumes include reprinted copies of the annual reports prepared
by the Commissioner of Patents from 1790 to 1843. The information in them varies,
but generally includes lists of the patents arranged alphabetically by subject
of the patent or chronologically by issue date. The Early Unnumbered United
States Patents, 1790 to 1836 and Index of Patents: 1790 to 1873, inclusive,
(described above) present all the bibliographic information included in these
four separate volumes, but in a much more useful format.
Plant Patent Directory
Produced by the National Association of Plant Patent Owners in 1990, this source
indexes all plant patents granted from the beginning of the series in 1931
to 1989. It indexes plant patents by plant patent number, plant species,
plant denomination, originator (inventor), and assignee. The plant patents
granted each year since then are indexed in annual supplements by plant patent
number, and plant species, beginning with 1990.

Cassis
Cassis is a CD ROM database of U.S. Patents produced by the USPTO. It allows
users to search by classification all patents granted by the United States
since 1790. Cassis also provides electronic versions of some USPTO publications,
such as the Index to the US Patent Classification System and the Manual of

Search Tools
Index to the US Patent Classification System
The Index allows users to locate the general area of the Manual of Classification
that covers the area of technology related to an invention, using both technical
and everyday language. Using the Index is the first step of a Novelty Patent
Search.
Manual of Classification
The Manual of Classification arranges all areas of technology into a hierarchical
classification scheme. Using class and subclass in a novelty patent search
allows you to locate all the patents granted in a specific area of technology.
Classification Definitions
The definitions to establish the scope of classes and subclasses. The definitions
include important search notes and suggests other related classes and subclasses

General Description of Availability
WIPO and EPO
Individual Countries
General Description of Availability
SIBL has a large collection of foreign and international patents and patent
gazettes. Those in full text are available mainly on microfilm, though some
of the more recent patents are available on CD ROM, and some of the older
patents are available in paper. Those in gazettes (i.e., an abstract of the
patent) are primarily available on paper.
Both the microfilm and CD ROM versions are located in SIBL's Microfilm Reading
Room on the lower level.* Those in book form may be either in SIBL's closed
stacks, retrievable with a call number, patent number and date, or in the
New York Public Library's Annex. Those kept in the Annex can be requested
at SIBL's Delivery Desk but take at least 24 hours to retrieve.
You may make photocopies of SIBL's foreign patents available on microfilm
and CD ROM. Due to the fragile condition of some of the older paper copies,
an archival photocopy may need to be made of these patents before photocopying
is permitted by the public.

-- serial number, mark, owner name(s), international class of goods and services
-- as well as a black and white image of the trademark. The Official Gazette
also lists those trademarks that have been registered that week and gives
notices concerning regulations and expirations. The print copy of the Official
Gazette arrives weekly, approximately a week and a half after the date of
publication. SIBL has the Official Gazette from 1872 to the present.
