The Schomburg Legacy: Documenting the
Global Black Experience for the 21st Century,
a 70th Anniversary commemoration exhibition was
presented in three venues at the Schomburg
Center--the Exhibition Hall, the Latimer Edison
Gallery and the American Negro Theater. It
presents a comprehensive survey of the development
of the Center's collections since the death of
Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (1938) and explores the
Center's role as the premier public research
library in the world devoted to documenting and
preserving the histories and cultures of people of
African descent worldwide.
The onsite exhibition was made possible by
The Coca-Cola Foundation, AT&T, Philip Morris
Companies Inc., 98.7 KISS-FM, and gifts in honor
of Andrew Heiskell from Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E.
Hansmann and from Mr. and Mrs. Sol Neil Corbin.
The onsite exhibition was also supported with
public funds from the Cultural Challenge Program
of the New York City Department of Cultural
Affairs, the City of New York, the State of New
York, the Office of the Borough President of
Manhattan and the New York State Black and Puerto
Rican Legislative Caucus.
