  1. Have students research the causes of World Wars I and II. How and when did the United States get involved? Discuss the status of African Americans in the military in these wars.

  2. Assign students to research the role of the African-American soldier in the military history of this country. Have them write a short essay on a military hero of African descent (start with the Revolutionary War).

  3. Have a series of classroom discussions on the similarities and differences of the United States' policies in World War I, the Vietnam War and the recent war in the Persian Gulf. Have students research newspaper articles that support their arguments.

  4. Have students interview members of their families and people in their communities who have gone to war. Have them write an essay based on this oral history.
