"The Ancient of Days," frontispiece to William Blake, Europe: A Prophecy

William Blake’s highly ambiguous stance toward Newton is vividly
captured in “The Ancient of Days” – the frontispiece to his
Europe: A Prophecy
(Lambeth, 1794) – in which the god Urizen,
fashioned on Newton, creates a world. For Blake, however, such
