Faced with a huge force of British soldiery under
the command of Viscount William Howe, Washington was forced in the
Fall of 1776 to abandon Manhattan for White Plains. On October 28,
1776, American forces were defeated in the battle of White Plains,
fought on Chatterton Hill, and in Greenburgh, nearby. Many historians
consider this battle the nadir of the Revolution. Washington’s
troops were forced across the river into New Jersey, where they
were eventually to defeat the British in a series of conflicts.
