<head>PREFACE</head>
<p>This inventory is one of several prepared as a part of the archival preservation program at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a branch of The New York Public Library.</p>
<p>The Schomburg archival preservation program involves the organization and preservation of primary source material held by the Center and of significance to the study of the Black Experience. It furthermore includes the preparation of detailed inventories of these records, making the information contained therein accessible as well as available to scholars.</p>
<p>The necessary staff and supplies for this program were made available through a combination of Library, National Endowment for the Humanities grant, and State of New York grant funds.</p>

<head>History</head>
<p>Community News Service was established in 1969 as a Harlem-based organization of minority journalists, providing news of black and Hispanic communities to the media. A staff of twelve, under the direction of executive director Annette Samuels, assembled a daily file of stories concerning minority communities in the city along with a calendar of coming events. The service sent reports several times weekly to more than thirty subscribers including <emph render="bold"><emph render="italic">The New York Times, The Daily News, The Amsterdam News, </emph></emph>CBS-TV, CBS Radio, WNBC- TV, and WLIB Radio. Other subscribers included several community groups.</p>
<p>The organization received its initial $275,000 funding from the Ford Foundation as part of the New School for Social Research's Urban Reporting Workshop. Over the next seven years, CNS received a total of $640,000 from the Ford Foundation. The loss of this grant money, coupled with CNS's failure to interest other foundations in giving grants led to the organization's demise. Community News Service laid off all but three staff members in Summer 1976, and ceased operation on 2 October 1976.</p>
<p>Shortly thereafter, a committee was formed to consider whether CNS should give up its tax exempt status and become a commercial news service, however, efforts to reopen the organization were unsuccessful.</p>

<head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>The records of the Community News Service largely represent the organization's working news files from 30 September 1969 to 20 August 1976. Although they provide very little insight into the background and structure of the organization itself, the records do document current events and social activities relevant to the New York black community during that period.</p>

<unittitle>DAILY FILE</unittitle>
</did>
<scopecontent>
<p>The Daily File which comprises the majority of the collection consists of a seven year run of daily Community Calendars and Files. The Calendars announce coming events of interest to the black community. The Files each consist of about four stories, whose subjects range from speeches, rallies, and cultural activities to crime and federal, state, and local legislation and programs. The stories emphasize New York City political subjects and events; however, a great many human interest stories are included. For the earlier years of the CNS operation, a Log consisting of abstracts of the File stories was also occasionally produced. </p>
<p>The Community Calendars, Logs, and Files are arranged in the above order in one chronological sequence. The sequence is almost complete; only occasional single issues are missing.</p>
