<p>This is a synthetic collection consisting of correspondence and miscellaneous manuscript material. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence by Maria Louisa to her mother Elizabeth Clarke Manning, her sister Elizabeth M. Hawthorne, her brother Nathaniel Hawthorne, and her sister-in-law Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. There are letters to Maria Louisa Hawthorne from her nephew Julian and her sister-in-law Sophia Peabody Hawthorne, dating from 1843 to 1852.</p>
