Each year, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts produces a comprehensive series of free public programs in its Bruno Walter Auditorium. Past events have featured:

  • Distinguished musicians (Barbara Cook, James Levine, Pete Seeger, Bobby Short, Rosalyn Tureck)
  • Members of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, New York City Opera and New York Philharmonic orchestras
  • Composers talking about their work (Robert Beaser, Richard Rodney Bennett, Elliott Carter, John Corigliano, Thea Musgrave, Arne Nordheim, Errollyn Wallen)
  • Conversations with playwrights (Edward Albee, Robert Anderson, Michael Frayn, David Henry Hwang, Sir Peter Shaffer, Paula Vogel)
  • Choreographer lectures (Gemze de Lappe, Donald Saddler, Glen Tetley, Christopher Wheeldon)
  • Theater programs featuring leading actors (Simon Russell Beale, Brian Bedford, Kathleen Chalfant, Nanette Fabray, Marcia Gay Harden, Julie Harris, Hal Holbrook, Cherry Jones, Swoosie Kurtz, Frank Langella, David Strathairn, Irene Worth)
  • Dance programs featuring leading ballerinas (Suzanne Farrell, Natalia Makarova, Maya Plisetskaya)
  • Dance recitals, master classes, play readings and panel discussions

The Library also presents festivals featuring the latest in the music, dance and theater of other countries (Mexico, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Spain, the United Kingdom, and, in the Performing Arts of Asia Festival, the cultures of countries from Kazakhstan to Japan.
