Recorded Sound and Moving Image Finding Aid:

CD CLASSIFICATION SCHEME

A typical CD call number looks like this: C-B41s.The first letter, "C," is a specific category of music (in this case, orchestral) and is represented on the spine of the CD by a color code.

The appropriate color for each letter can be found in the chart below.

A first letter of C = red tape.

The second letter, "B," usually represents the composer's last name (or performer or country, depending on the type of CD). You will see this second letter on the spine below the colored tape.

C-B41s = Red tape, letter "B"

The number that follows the first 2 letters represents a specific number given to the composer, performer or country. It will be the same in all categories. For instance: C-B41s is Beethoven's orchestral music; D-B41s is Beethoven's chamber music; etc.
