Library security policy requires that all materials not required for research-including bags, outerwear, and umbrellas-must be checked before researchers are admitted to the Brooke Russell Astor Reading Room for Rare Books and Manuscripts. Readers are required to store all personal belongings in the Library's checkroom. Purses must also be checked; researchers may keep valuables with them in clear plastic bags provided by the staff in the checkroom. The Library's checkroom will not store belongings overnight. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING TO YOUR SEAT WITHOUT STAFF APPROVAL.

Pencils only may be used in the Astor Reading Room. Smoking, eating, and drinking are not permitted. The use of personal computers is permitted; power outlets are available at each desk. Handle Library materials with care. Place unbound items flat on the table. Book supports will be provided by staff for bound items. Do not lean on or place anything on top of Library materials. Tracing or rubbing is not permitted. For information about copying items from the collection, please see the section entitled "Reproductions" below.
