Humanities and Social Sciences Library > Collections & Reading Rooms > Print Collection ![]() Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (Genoa, 1609-Mantua 1665) Painter, printmaker and draughtsman, Castiglione is best known for his mythological
and religious compositions, replete with animals and still-lifes, set in expansive
landscapes. In this etching, reminiscent of his painted versions of Noah
Entering the Ark, the artist weaves together shepherds, their baggage
and their flocks, which spill out into the grand landscape. This brilliant,
richly inked, and rare etching fully captures Castiglione’s virtuosity
and his sparkling, flickering line, most evident in his drawings, oil sketches,
etchings and monotypes, a technique invented by Castiglione by which the artist
paints on an unincised plate, which when printed, creates a single strong
impression. Photographic Services & Permissions Back
