Other Art Materials at The New York Public Library

In addition to the Art & Architecture Collection, the Humanities and Social Sciences Library also houses the Photography Collection and the Print Collection, both are specialized archives collecting original works of art, and supporting literature. In fact, the collections of the Research Libraries are rich in visual materials and information about the cultures and art of the world.

The following list is a brief aid locating other art materials. You should begin with CATNYP, the Libraries’ online catalog, for a sense of which collections have materials on a selected subject. Check the location field in the catalog entry: for example, if it says Humanities-Art or Humanities-Slavic, then the material is held by the Art or Slavic collections, respectively.

You can consult a librarian at the reference desk of the Art & Architecture Collection (Room 300), by telephone (212-930-0835), by e-mail (artref@nypl.org), letter or by scheduling a personal research consultation.

Picture Research
The staff of the Art & Architecture Collection may be able to suggest strategies for research. If you wish to have the research done for you, you may contact NYPL Express, a fee-based information service provided by the Library. Finding images of a subject can be done a number of ways. The Digital Gallery contains over 600,000 images, including 30,000 in the Picture Collection. The Picture Collection at Mid-Manhattan Library is a superb circulating collection of images from books, newspapers, and magazines organized by subject.
