William Hogarth. Hogarth Painting the Comic
Muse. 1758. The Artist FilesAmong the Library's unique resources are the Artist Files which date to the late nineteenth century, although many items are from the early to mid-twentieth century. The files are uncataloged and there are no references to them in our dictionary or online catalogs. The original files were put on microfiche in the 1980's. The files do not include printmakers, photographers, medalists or city planners and the contents of the files are not exclusively focused on major and minor masters but include popular artists as well. There are over a million items on painters, sculptors, architects, fashion designers, jewelers, craftsmen and collectors. The range of material is broad and consists of articles from magazines and newspapers, reproductions from original engravings and photographs, manuscript letters, gallery and museum exhibition announcements and miscellaneous items. The Artist Files are an indispensable supplement to our biographical dictionaries, and contain information that cannot be found in other published sources. Covering the late 19th century until the early 1980s, these files are indexed alphabetically by the artist's name. The online version of the index is currently under construction. Harriet Burdock
