In addition to the internationally-distinguished collection areas noted above, the following subjects in the indicated languages are collected comprehensively by the Slavic and Baltic Division. Other subjects are collected at varying levels. Readers should remember that Albanian, Estonian, Hungarian, and Romanian are presently part of the General Research Division, while Turkic and other national languages of the Former Soviet Union are held by the Asian and Middle Eastern Division.

"Billings" refers to the unique classification system developed by the first Director of The New York Public Library, Dr. John Shaw Billings (1838-1913).   Beginning in 1971, the Division began adding a fixed order number to the alphabetic system developed by Billings (e.g., *QDZ 98-2106)

The names of selection officers for each language are indicated.

While reviewing this list, one should keep in mind that certain areas--for example, the performing arts, Judaica in Slavic languages, maps--are the collecting responsibility of other units of the Library, regardless of language.
