Procedures for Access
The Lawrence H. Slaughter Collection is comprised of over 600 maps, and
atlases and books that depict English mapping of the New World over three
centuries. There are some additional items which show Europe and the rest
of the Old World, as well as Dutch and other countries' mapping for comparison
and to demonstrate cartographic continuity.
A Finding Aid with a Title List and Author
List can be consulted at the reference desk. A call slip is required for
its use and though it may not be copied, it can be viewed on our Website. All
these items are available to the researcher, with a few stipulations as to
usage:
- Since this collection has many rare items, verifiable identification
must be presented.
- A call slip must be made out for each item, and only one may be
used at a time.
- Slaughter Collection material may be used with other items in the
Map Division's holdings at the discretion of the librarian.
- Readers must use this material in an area designated by the staff
for increased supervision.
- Intensive research of this collection may be facilitated by making
an appointment with Map Division staff.
- Photocopying is limited and subject to added restrictions.
- All readers should take special care when handling and using this
important material. Only pencils may be used for taking notes.
- The librarian may impose additional restrictions and safeguards
if deemed necessary.
The Map Division is delighted to make this cartographic resource available
to the public. We ask your cooperation in making the best use of this new acquisition
to our holdings. Some of the items may be temporarily unavailable due to cataloging,
conservation treatment, exhibition or other reasons.
