Nuremberg Synagogue (1874) - image 1

Nürnberg, Blick zur Synagoge
Postcard, [Germany, n.d.]
Dorot Jewish Divison, NYPL

Jews were encouraged to resettle in Nuremberg as soon as 1351, expelled again in
1499, and not tolerated therafter until the 1850s. By 1874, the community had
completed work on a synagogue, built in the distinctive Moorish-Byzantine Revival style
beloved by bourgeois Jews of the time, which acknowledged an "Oriental" heritage,
distinct from but parallel to the Christian traditions represented by the Gothic and
Mannerist revivals. Seen from across the Pegnitz, its dome and cupolas contributed
an exotic element to one of the world's most outrageously picturesque urban
environments.
