About Access

On-site access

To look at any of the newspapers and periodicals on this list, simply complete a call slip for each title at the public service desk in the reading room of the Dorot Jewish Division, on the ground floor of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, adjacent to the 42nd Street entrance. The materials should be at your table within five minutes. Alternatively, you can call the Division in advance at (212) 930-0601 and the titles requested should be waiting for you. Please note the Jewish Division's bag and coat check policy.

A number of microfilm readers are available in the Jewish Division reading room, including the new Canon 800 reader-printer, which produces the best possible paper copies from microfilm and microfiche at 25 cents a copy (copying card required, available in the reading room for 50 cents). There is also a self-service photocopier in the Jewish Division reading room (15 cents a copy with card, 20 cents with cash), for use with books and periodicals in hard copy where there is no reason to expect that the material may be damaged by photocopying.

Off-site access

Photocopy service: The Dorot Jewish Division attempts (at no charge and within one business day) to locate, print, and mail or fax short articles, where the patron is able to supply an exact citation of title, volume number (or date) and page number(s). To contact the Jewish Division, click here. Note that where extensive searching or copying is called for, requests are liable to be referred to NYPL Express, the Library's fee-based research service, for a cost estimate.

Microfilm purchase: Microfilm copies of titles filmed by The New York Public Library are available for purchase at $80 per reel. Please allow two to four months for delivery of standard orders (rush orders are also available). To inquire whether a given title is available for purchase from the Library, or, failing that, elsewhere, or to ascertain the number of reels in a run, contact the Jewish Division (freidus@nypl.org).

Interlibrary loan: The New York Public Library's Research Libraries provide interlibrary loan (ILL), nationally and internationally, of most of their materials, including the newspapers and periodicals on microfilm listed here. Please note that such requests can be filled only when received via one of The New York Public Library's ILL and document supply partners, the member institutions of the Research Libraries Group's SHARES consortium. There is no charge for this service. Any recognized library in the United States, however, may borrow Jewish Division holdings filmed as part of the United States Newspaper Project, again at no charge.
