The guide is intended to lead the reader interested in the Spanish-American War, to materials in the General Research Division and the United States History, Local History and Genealogy Division. These divisions' collections on Latin American and U.S. history, respectively, are among the most comprehensive in the country; Iberian and Filipino history are also strongly represented in the collections. [ICI 72-1892] In contrast to the white press, African American newspapers were only cautiously supportive of the U.S. declaration of war against Spain. Editors demanded black officers for black military units, and in the post-war period the black press sided largely with the anti-imperialists. The editors drew obvious parallels between the mistreatment of black Americans at home and Filipinos abroad.
