[JFE 86-4420] Bierce, an American short story writer, was also a major feature columnist for Hearst's San Francisco Examiner and New York Journal. [ICI 72-1892] In contrast to the white press, African American newspapers were only cautiously supportive of the U.S. declaration of war against Spain. Editors demanded black officers for black military units, and in the post-war period the black press sided largely with the anti-imperialists. The editors drew obvious parallels between the mistreatment of black Americans at home and Filipinos abroad. The Cuban Crisis as Reflected in the New York Press (1895-1898). New York: Octagon Books Inc., 1965. [HOO] A detailed analysis of the war as it was reported in the New York papers from February 1895 through 1898. Provides important background on the newspapers and their reporters as well as a general bibliography on the New York press.
