The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library have a sizable and
long-standing collection of materials on Mormon history. Beginning with the
1899 donation of the William C. Berrian collection, which contained 451 books,
325 pamphlets, 52 volumes of newspapers, and over 500 individual, unbound
newspapers, the Library has maintained the collections in Mormon history
at a high level. They include histories, biographies, newspapers and other
periodicals, government documents, diaries, and letters. Highlights of the
collection include the early editions of the Book of Mormon and
one of nine known copies of The Book of Commandments. The
materials on Mormon history are supported by an excellent collection of American
history.
In addition to these collections, which are housed in the General
Research Division, the Manuscripts
and Archives Division possesses a number of related letters, diaries, typescripts,
and ephemera. Thirty-seven letters enhance the papers of the Alfred Theodore
Schroeder collection and six other letters came to the Library in the scrapbooks
of Charles L. Woodward. Various other files not primarily concerned with the
Mormons may include other "Mormon" correspondence. The most prominent
items include correspondence from Joseph Smith, Orson Hyde, Sidney Rigdon, Willard
Richards, and one of the diaries of Brigham Young, Jr. Readers wishing to use
these materials must apply to the Office of Special Collections in Room 316.
Using the Catalogs
General instructions for locating materials are given in the Research
Guide, How Do I Find
a Book?. The following information is specific to the topic at hand.
The Dictionary
Catalog contains some 2,200 items relating to Mormon history. The bulk
of materials is found under the subject heading Mormons and Mormonism. This
heading is broken down into various sub-headings which are arranged alphabetically
with two exceptions. Firstly, Mormons and Mormonism--Bibliography precedes
all other subdivisions. Secondly, the geographical subdivisions come mostly
at the end in their own alphabetical sequence. A list of related subject
terms precedes all of these headings. In addition, the Book of Mormon is
listed under Mormon, Book of.
In CATNYP, the online catalog, there
are several major subject headings: Mormon Church; Mormons; Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. All of these have a number of subdivisions, and history
is a valid subdivision for any of these headings. The subject terms used in CATNYP
records are listed in the Library of Congress Subject Headings available
electronically at www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco.
Researchers may choose to use a key word approach in place of, or in addition
to, the subject approach; a key word approach will result in more titles. It
is imperative to use the conjunction “and” between the appropriate
words or phrases in a key word search. For example: Mormons and history
Mormon Church and women
Mormon Church and doctrine

importance or survey the resources of a particular library or archive.
These lists generally exclude books published by Deseret Book or Bookcraft
and articles in periodicals published by the Mormon Church.

Guides to Manuscript Sources
The Library's manuscript holdings relating directly to Mormon history are

in locating primary materials in other institutions. In addition, sources

not be overlooked.

and the Utah State Archives, Salt Lake City. The entries in each section are
arranged alphabetically by author. It should be noted that the list is annotated
and indexes only the annotations and not the entries themselves.
Biographical Sources
Published biographies in book form should be searched in the Dictionary
Catalog and in CATNYP (see Research Guide Biographical
Resources). The biographies on Mormon individuals are mostly laudatory;
there are only a handful which are based upon solid scholarly research.
For articles embedded in biographical dictionaries, consult the Biography
and Genealogy Master Index; however, the finest single reference
source for biographical materials on Mormons is
Wiggins, Marvin E. Mormons
and Their Neighbors. ([Provo, Utah]: Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham
Young University, 1984), 2 vols. APK 86-3304. This is a
master index to 194 published volumes and lists the sources or over 75,000 biographical
sketches "1820 to the present."
Basic Works on Mormon History
Most written history of the Mormons can be classed as either sympathetic
or critical. Since the mid-20th century, the number of balanced, scholarly
treatments has increased considerably. The following list focuses on works
dealing with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Utah) and covers
other movements only incidentally. For specific treatment of individual Mormon
Churches and dissenting factions, see Dale Morgan's and Steven Shield's bibliographies
(above).

Researching Mormonism in Electronic Resources
ATLA Religion Database with ATLA Serials. This resource
contains citations to articles, books, and book reviews from journals specializing
in religion, church history, and theology; the full text is supplied for many
articles. Coverage varies according to publication, although most date from
the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; articles are mainly in English with
some in other major European tongues. This is an essential research tool for
those studying the Mormon experience in its many ramifications.
America: History and Life. An index to scholarly publications
in American history.
JSTOR.
A resource which provides the full text for articles from scholarly
journals. Since the scope of this database includes many disciplines, one is
able to research Mormonism from various perspectives, including historical, theological,
sociological, artistic, feminist, etc.
Researchers in Mormonism are also advised to consult various other online periodical
indexes available in the General Research Division; especially appropriate are:
America’s
Historical Newspapers; EBSCO Research Databases; American Periodical Series Online;
Readers’ Guide Retro; 19th Century Masterfile (which includes Poole’s
Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906); Art Full Text; Art Index Retrospective;
Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals; and the electronic databases
for newspapers.
