Book Reviews: A Research Guide

Book reviews provide summaries, contemporary criticism, and succinct evaluations about published works. Reviews normally appear within a year of the date of publication; if this date is not known, it can often be ascertained by searching the Dictionary Catalog of the Research Libraries of the New York Public Library, which lists pre-1972 acquisitions, or CATNYP, the computer catalog which records acquistions from 1972 to the present. If these two sources are unable to provide the desired information, speak to a librarian at the Information Desk.

Basic Reference Volumes

Once the date of publication of a book is known, the following indexes to book reviews may be searched:

Book Review Digest (New York: Wilson, 1905- )*R-*GAA This index to reviews appearing in general interest periodicals of the Anglo-American world is arranged alphabetically by author of the book, with indexes by title and subject. It is especially useful for its selections from selected reviews.

Book Review Index (Detroit: Gale Research, 1965- ). *R-*GAA Arranged alphabetically by author of book and supplemented by a title index, this tool cites reviews appearing in British and American scholarly and general interest publications.

Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, 1802-1974 (Woodbridge, CT: Research Publications, 1982-1984) *R-*GAA 89-2991 and Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Scholarly Journals, 1886-1974 (Arlington, Va.: Carrollton Press, 1979-1982). *R-*GAA 89-20706. Both are arranged alphabetically by author of the book and are supplemented by title indexes.

Index to Book Reviews in the Humanities (Williamston, MI: Thompson, 1960- ) *R-*GAA. Arranged alphabetically by book author, this work indexes scholarly journals from North America and Britain.

Requesting Materials

Sources for book review citations will provide the names and dates of periodicals in which the reviews appear. To obtain the call numbers of the appropriate periodicals, first check A Selected List of Frequently Requested Periodicals, located in the Main Reading Room and in the Public Catalog Room. If the periodical in question is not found in this catalog, check the 800-volume Dictionary Catalog of the Research Libraries of the New York Public Library, representing materials acquired before 1972, and CATNYP, the computer catalog of materials acquired since 1972. After determining the call number for the periodical, complete a blue and white call slip with the title of the periodical, the date of the article, and the call number. Do not include the title of the article or its author.

Electronic Resources

Researchers may also consult various electronic databases, which normally include book reviews among the materials indexed.

The Book Review Digest is the most comprehensive of these electronic resources; it may be supplemented by the more specialized data bases which treat various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. A librarian can assist you in utilizing these reference sources.
