The Black New Yorkers

The final exhibition in the series Black New Yorkers/Black New York offers a historical overview of the last century of growth and development of the black population in the five boroughs, utilizing documents, photographs, and memorabilia to present demographic, chronological, and thematic surveys reflecting the diversity and complexity of the 20th-century black New York population. Places in New York identified with these black New Yorkers (communities, neighborhoods, organizations, institutions, and other venues) highlight the geographical and material presence of black New Yorkers over the last century. In addition to images and objects contained in the Center's collections, items are drawn from collections in other repositories.

A companion volume, The Black New Yorkers: The Schomburg Illustrated Chronology, published by Wiley, is available in the Schomburg Center's Shop.
