The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts > Exhibitions Beyond the Rainbow: Music of Harold ArlenFrom February 15, 2005 through May 21, 2005
The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts pays tribute to composer and songwriter Harold Arlen on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Go beyond his bext-known song to discover the treasury of jazz, ballads and blues. Arlen created scores for Broadway and Hollywood. With Yip Harburg, he wrote the best-loved song in movie history, "Over the Rainbow." He also collaborated with lyricists Ted Koehler, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin and others. Arlen's songs will fill the gallery with touch-screen interactives allowing visitors to hear Broadway and film scores, as well as jazz standards. An ambient soundtrack starts off the "Dynamite," an early success for Fletcher Henderson & His Dixie Stompers, and continues with overtures and dance scores from his Broadway shows. |
