Taking a chronological approach, this class will view representative examples of two hundred years of classic children's books. We will examine various notable editions of both a British children's fantasy classic, Alice in Wonderland, and an American classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Illustration techniques, period social and religious concerns, humor, and pathos will be explored via representative books from colonial primers to the works of Maurice Sendak.
