Celebrate Mercator's Birthday with a Visit to NYPL's Map Division
Rumold Mercator's double-hemisphere world map, ca. 1637. NYPL, Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division. Digital ID 1524650.Tuesday, March 13 through Saturday, September 29, 2012
Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (Map and directions)
The year 2012 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Gerard Mercator, the Flemish geographer, engraver, and maker of scientific instruments, maps, and globes. In celebration of this event, NYPL is hosting Mercator at 500, an exhibition of extraordinary cartographic works — some of which have not been displayed in decades — that not only illuminate the brilliant mind and skillful hand of the cartographer himself, but also highlight his esteemed position and enduring legacy within the history of cartography and geography.
