Schomburg Center Welcomes New Director
New leadership at NYPL: President Anthony W. Marx and Khalil Gibran Muhammad
Photo: Terrence JenningsAt the end of July, NYPL's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture welcomed its new director, Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad. Dr. Muhammad, a native of Chicago's South Side, was a newly tenured Professor of History at Indiana University, where he completed a major interpretive book in African-American studies published by Harvard University Press. A great-grandson of Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, he has deep roots in Black history and in Harlem and he looks "forward to continuing the Schomburg's remarkable legacy as a world-class institution."
