LIVE from the NYPL hosted an evening of warm and lively remembrances of late comedian George Carlin on Wednesday, March 24 in the Celeste Bartos Forum. Hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, the tribute featured special appearances by Carlin's family, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, Ben Stiller, Amy Stiller, Kevin Smith, Lewis C.K., Dylan Brody, Floyd Abrams, and Lewis Lapham.
On a stage graced with a single upholstered chair meant to represent the man himself and flanked by two large screens playing clips of Carlin's explosively funny performances, the speakers declared without hesitation how much effect Carlin had on their lives as performers, remarked on his pioneering brand of comedy, his generosity of spirit, his profound intelligence, and his boundless wit. Filmmaker Kevin Smith exclaimed, "he made everything I do, possible." Tony Hendra titled him Poet Laureate of the Ridiculous. Lewis Lapham observed, "George was a comedian, but his purpose was dissent." And Floyd Abrams discussed the Supreme Court's decision in FCC v. Pacifica on Carlin's 7 Filthy Words. Of course, in true Carlin fashion, the evening was filled with quips, wordplay, and a fitting expletive here and there.
"George is here tonight," insisted Carlin's older brother Patrick to the crowd of Carlin devotees, which included Steve Martin and Richard Pryor's daughter Rain Pryor. "He's having a groovy time with you all! Thank you for being here."
