Sneak preview of Through Deaf Eyes , Celebrating Women In Film, CEO Jeffrey Smalls, and author Debby Applegate Highlighted in Free Programs at The New York Public Library

Free March events at The New York Public Library include a sneak preview of the upcoming PBS documentary Through Deaf Eyes and a sampling of rarely screened short films celebrating women in film. Also scheduled is a program with Jeffrey Smalls, President and CEO of Smalls Electrical Construction Inc., who discusses how he founded his company and author Debby Applegate who will discuss her book The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher . The Library presents more than 20,000 free public programs throughout its 86 branches in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island annually, complementing its broad collections and other services. Debby Applegate author of "The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher" visits the Library. Ms. Applegate will discuss her subject, Reverend Henry Ward Beecher, a New York icon in the nineteenth century, famous for preaching a Gospel of Love that transformed modern American Christianity and for mixing politics and religion in the fight against slavery.

Roman Historical Relief

An illustrated slide lecture with Dr. Nancy L. Thompson, Associate Museum Educator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Romans embellished their public monuments, such as triumphal arches, with relief sculptures representing and commemorating specific historical events and individuals with meticulous descriptive detail.

In celebration of Women's History Month, this multimedia presentation by Dr. Jasmin B. Cowin explores the role of women in opera, their struggles, conflicts, and the sexual politics that ensnared them, their relationships with mothers, fathers, siblings, and lovers. Dr. Cowin lectures at educational and cultural institutions, including Hunter College and the German Embassy, on a wide range of opera related themes.
