Tenth Annual Webby Awards Honor homeworkNYC.org

Created by New York City's Public Libraries, Website for Students Provides 24-hour Homework Help

The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences has named homeworkNYC.org, an innovative website for New York City's students, as an Official Honoree of the 2006 Webby Awards. The website, designed by The New York Public Library in collaboration with Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library for New York City's students, brings together in a single site all of the resources kindergartners through 12th graders need to help themselves with their assignments. Whether at home or after school in a community library, students can use this site, which was developed in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, to access resources previously available only in a physical library. Live one-on-one help by phone or online from librarians, teachers, and professional tutors; quick answers to queries from encyclopedias and dictionaries provided by answers.com; and Study Guides are just a few of the numerous free services available. Funding for homeworkNYC.org has been provided by a major grant from The Wallace Foundation as part of the Learning in Libraries initiative.

The Webby Awards are the leading international honor for websites. Awards are determined by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a global organization with a membership that includes such luminaries as musician David Bowie, Naked Chef Jaime Oliver, and Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser.

"With homeworkNYC.org we are making information available to students whenever and wherever it is needed," said Susan Kent, Director and Chief Executive of the Branch Libraries. "The power of the internet allows us to develop innovative approaches that open new realms of library service. We are extremely pleased the effort to provide these services has been recognized."

"This project has involved extensive participation from public librarians throughout New York City, as well as many teachers, school librarians, and administrators from the New York City Department of Education. The site is an exciting new research tool for New York City students, which brings the best of homework resources of New York City's public libraries together in one place. And so it is thrilling to be honored by The Webby Awards," said Andrew Wilson, The New York Public Library's Youth Web Editorial Coordinator.

"The Webby Awards honors the outstanding websites that are setting the standards for the internet," said Tiffany Shlain, founder and ambassador of The Webby Awards. "homeworkNYC.org's Official Honoree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."
