The New York Public Library is now providing high quality reproductions of materials from its collections available for purchase from the Library's Digital Gallery website at http://digitalgallery.nypl.org. Web site viewers can purchase a print, framed or unframed, in a variety of sizes. The Library's Digital Gallery is a treasure trove of images featuring drawings, illuminated manuscripts, maps, photographs, posters, prints, rare illustrated books, and more. The prints provide a wide range of options for interior design and décor.

NYPL Digital Gallery is The New York Public Library's image database, developed to provide free and open online access to hundreds of thousands of images from the original and rare holdings of the Library. Encompassing the subject strengths of the Library's vast collections, these materials represent the fine and decorative arts, performing arts, history, applied sciences, and social sciences. Examples of this far-ranging content include artwork from classic illustrated zoologies and botanies such as Pomona Britannica; Felice Beato's photographs of Japan; theatrical documentation, including photographs of the Theatre Guild's first performance of Porgy in 1927; rare illustrated books such as William Blake's hand-printed 1793 masterpiece America a Prophecy; portraits of African Americans in the mid-19th century; and panoramic cityscapes of New York City's Fifth Avenue.

Photographic prints are printed on photographic paper exposed by light (LightJet printer), rather than ink sprayed on paper (InkJet printer). The LightJet printer prints at 300 ppi continuous tone, equal to a 4000 dpi resolution on an InkJet. Customers also have a choice of formats, including diptychs and triptychs, and access to cropping tools. Images are reproduced on Fuji Crystal Archive, which rates 70-80 years of use under normal conditions. Handcrafted custom-built frames are available in a variety of wood or metal moldings, including black wood, natural wood, mahogany, black metal, and pewter. Matting services are also available. Pricing ranges from $30 for an unframed 8 x 10" print to $275 for a custom-framed 20 x 30" print. (11 x 14" and 16 x 20" prints are also available.) The New York Public Library is using Emeryville, California-based company Pictopia to provide the photo processing and back-end e-commerce.

Images are also available as TIFF files for licensing to enhance books, magazine or newspaper articles, CD-ROMs, documentaries, exhibitions, web sites, calendars, brochures, or promotional campaigns.
