The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Announces Free Programs in Theater, Dance, and Music for 2006-2007

Treasures from the Archive: The Billy Rose Theatre Collection at 75, Paddy Chayefsky Celebration, and Performing Arts of Asia and Middle East Festival Among the Highlights

The 2006-2007 season of free public programs at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center opens on Monday, September 25, 2006, with the first in a series of programs celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Library's Billy Rose Theatre Collection. The series Treasures from the Archive: The Billy Rose Theatre Collection at 75 features programs that incorporate rare and original materials from the Theatre Collection. The opening event at the Irish Repertory Theatre features readings of correspondence and dramatic works by Dion Boucicault, Sean O'Casey, Eugene O'Neill, and George Bernard Shaw. Later programs in the series features readings of scenes and plays, many unpublished and unproduced, from playwright collections in the Theatre Collection. The theatre series also features a celebration of the Paddy Chayefsky Papers, the processing of which has just been completed at the Library. A reading of an unpublished and unproduced play by Clifford Odets, from the Library's Clifford Odets Papers, will also be presented. The theatre series is planned in conjunction with the Library's exhibition, Stars and Treasures: 75 Years of Collecting Theatre, which opens at the Library in November.

The Treasures of the Music Division series will present recitals featuring works for which the Music Division owns the composer's manuscripts (holographs). Another series is planned to celebrate the centennial of the birth of composer Dmitri Shostakovich. In the field of dance, the Library for the Performing Arts will present a series on dance in Cuba and another on Italian dance, in conjunction with the exhibitions Dance in Cuba, opening in September, and 600 Years of Italian Dance, opening in November. The Library also continues its Performing Arts of Asia and Middle East Festival.

An Afternoon with Composer Marta Ptaszynska

The Polish-born composer will introduce a screening of her work, The Holocaust: Memorial Cantata, conducted by Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Ms. Ptaszynska donated the manuscript for the work to the Library's Music Division several years ago. Part of the Treasures of the Music Division series.
