New York, NY, November 24, 2004 -- State Commissioner of Education Richard P. Mills; Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents, Adelaide Sanford; New York City Schools Chancellor, Joel I. Klein; New York State Assemblywoman Sandra Galef; Co-chair, Regents Commission on Library Service and New York Public Library Trustee Abby Milstein; and President of The New York Public Library, Dr. Paul LeClerc, will address over 150 education and community leaders and library advocates from the Metropolitan area on November 29, 2004 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The New York Public Library, Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The meeting will discuss the vital role libraries play in education, the crisis in library funding, and the Regents proposal for better state support for libraries, entitled New Century Libraries. A full list of speakers can be found below.

The meeting is cosponsored by the Metropolitan New York Library Council, the New York State Association of Library Boards, the New York Library Association, The New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Borough Public Library, the New York City School Library System, and the New York State Library.

New Century Libraries would provide $107 million in new state aid to New York’s libraries. If passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, the proposal would provide substantial increases in support for libraries of all types across the state. The proposal includes funding to expand NOVEL (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library); more support for public, academic, and school libraries; need-based aid to libraries in high-need areas; improving outreach programs through the Urban Library Initiative; and the expansion of library based literacy and reading programs.

This meeting is the 7th in a series of meetings that are taking place throughout New York State that are helping to create a statewide network of library advocates and supporters who will work together to strengthen library services for all New Yorkers.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition to Commissioner Mills and Chancellor Klein, participants will hear from representatives of the State Library, as well as library leaders and experienced library advocates on both a local and statewide level. The program follows:
