New York City Council Member Madeline Provenzano Secures $10,000 for NYPL Books and Materials

Provenzano to Visit City Island Branch on February 28

New York, NY, February 26, 2003 -- On Friday, February 28 at 3:30 p.m., New York City Council Member Madeline Provenzano will visit the recently well-stocked shelves of the City Island Branch of The New York Public Library after securing $10,000 for books and materials for all library branches located in Council District 13. These branches include Allerton, City Island, Pelham Bay, Throg’s Neck, Van Nest, and Westchester Square. Council Member Provenzano will also attend a chess program for children. The City Island Branch is located at 320 City Island Avenue between Bay and Fordham Streets in the Bronx.

“Libraries are essential tools for educational and economic opportunities in every neighborhood in New York City, especially during this time of significant budget reductions,” said Mary Elizabeth Wendt, Associate Director of The Branch Libraries. “The more than 40 million people who use public libraries throughout the City every year depend on the support of public officials like Council Member Provenzano to keep libraries open with plenty of new books and materials on the shelves.”

“$10,000 translates to about 700 new books for library branches in District 13,” said Council Member Provenzano. “Quality public libraries are an essential city service now, more then ever, with New Yorkers hurting from the current economic downturn and our children relying on public libraries as a safe haven after school to read, do homework, and explore the world. New library books benefit our entire community   and I am thrilled to be able to provide this kind of relief to The New York Public Library system at this time.”
