The New York Public Library’s Annual list of the Best Reference Materials for 2003 Now Available

New York, NY, May 13, 2003 -- Ever wonder about the behavioral characteristics of the Portuguese Water Dog? Have questions about culinary history and the food markets of the world? Interested in obscure horror authors? Have a little time on your hands?  Well, it’s time to get a copy of Best of Reference 2003.

The New York Public Library’s Best of Reference Booklist is an annual guide to the best reference materials available. Each one of the answers to the questions above and countless other inquiries on just about every subject imaginable, can be found in a reference source somewhere. To make finding the answers easier, NYPL reference librarians have once again listed the most useful reference books, Web sites, and electronic resources* under subject headings that are a variation on the theme of “Time.” Reference materials such as Dogs: The Ultimate Dictionary of Over 1,000 Breeds (which lists the physical, behavioral, and historical characteristics of over 1,000 breeds of dogs) can be found under “Timeless Pleasure.”

The Scout Report and Archives (one of the Internet’s longest running weekly publications, offering a selection of high quality online material) is listed under “Time Moves On.” And the Encyclopedia of Terrorism (which provides detailed discussions on the who, what, when, where, and why of terrorism, amongst other things) can be found under “Hard Times.” Selection criteria include the usefulness of the materials in local branch reference collections, organization of material, style of presentation, and authority of author and editor.

Each year The New York Public Library unveils its picks for best reference books in front of an audience of library staff and publishers. The booklist is available for free at any of the 85 NYPL branches located in Manhattan, the Bronx, or Staten Island. It is also available on the Library’s web site (www.nypl.org) under “recommended readings.”

*Electronic resources are informational databases accessible from all branches of The New York Public Library. Many electronic resources may be accessed remotely by NYPL cardholders.
