Expanded NYPL Online Databases Offer Access to Thousands of Full-Text Articles

New Databases Are Added to EBSCO as ProQuest Is Discontinued

New York, March 15, 2002 -- An expanded list of electronic databases is now available to New York Public Library patrons through EBSCO Information Services, the provider of online databases of full-text periodical and newspaper articles. The expanded EBSCO will replace ProQuest Direct, which will be discontinued as of March 31 due to sharply rising subscription costs.

The newly acquired EBSCO databases, as well as a range of other valuable electronic resources, are available at all 85 branch libraries, the four research libraries, and via the Internet with an NYPL borrower's card from a person’s home, office, or school. Patrons can gain access by clicking on the "Electronic Resources" link on the Library’s homepage on the Web at www.nypl.org, selecting EBSCO, and then entering their Library card number.

The Library was able to build on an existing agreement between EBSCO and New York State’s Empire Link, in order to provide these additional, highly rated EBSCO databases. They include:

  • Academic Search Premier–provides full text for 3,350 scholarly publications covering academic areas of study including social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.
  • Masterfile Premier–provides full text for over 1,880 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multi-cultural issues and more. This database also contains full text for 200 reference books, 70,000 biographies, 60,000 primary source documents, and an image collection of 91,000 photos, maps and flags.
  • Business Source Premier–provides full text for over 2,480 scholarly business journals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, and international business. Company information from Dun & Bradstreet is included for 3,000,000 companies.
  • Health databases–include Health Source/Consumer Edition, which offers 190 searchable, full-text periodicals with information on such topics as the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health; and Clinical Reference Systems, which provides over 7,000 reports, in every-day language, describing symptoms, treatments, risks, and after-effects of a vast array of medical topics and conditions.
  • News SourcesBusiness Wire News, a full-text newswire database, and Newspaper Source, which offers full text for 159 regional U.S. newspapers, eighteen international newspapers, six newswires, and nine newspaper columns.
  • Other EBSCO resources–a Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection of nearly 480 full-text titles; a Religion and Philosophy Collection of articles on world religions, biblical studies, political philosophy, philosophy of language, and other related topics; and a Professional Development Collection that provides nearly 450 full text journals, designed for professional educators.

In addition, The New York Public Library has contracted with the Gale Group for electronic access to full-text articles from The New York Times (for one year); this will include full-text access to New York Post articles from 2001 to the present.
