The New York Public Library Global Beat Booklist Provides Multicultural Reading Recommendations for Teens

The New York Public Library's Global Beat booklist offers teens a jumping off point for exploring other countries, people, traditions, customs, and lifestyles. Although the United States draws immigrants from all over the world in record numbers, tensions among people who don't understand their neighbor's cultures are still high. Education is one of the best ways to bridge the gaps that exist between people because of a lack of understanding. The novels, poetry, history, and biography in Global Beat provide the opportunity for teens to read about new people and places while also highlighting the universal experience of the struggles all teens face growing up.

Global Beat includes books from and about all parts of the world. The sections are: Africa, Europe, Far East & Down Under, India and Pakistan, Latino Roots, The Middle East, Native Americans, and A New Life in America. The books cover art, oral traditions, poetry, history, fiction, biography, and politics. Some of the books deal specifically with teenage responses to historical and political events in various countries.

Many of the titles listed in Global Beat are available in recorded format or Braille from the Andrew Heiskell Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. For information on this service call (212) 206-5400.
