Fact Sheet

NYPL Online Bookstore

Librarians at The New York Public Library have been compiling lists of outstanding books for its users for nearly a century. The Library has now expanded this service to readers everywhere by listing its recommendations online. The NYPL Online Bookstore recommends significant and interesting books and authors selected by librarians and curators and is accessible through the Library's home page on the World Wide Web at http://www.nypl.org.

The recommended titles are available in local libraries and bookstores. For readers who want to purchase these titles, or any of the over one million titles available online, the site offers the convenience of online electronic ordering, via BarnesandNoble.com. A portion of each sale through BarnesandNoble.com when entered from NYPL's Online Bookstore contributes to the support of The New York Public Library.

Current recommended reading lists posted include:

Books of the Century
A tour of the last 100 years through the works of some of the greatest writers of the century.

Poetry: A Selection in Celebration National Poetry Month
Recommendations from the collections of The New York Public Library.

Books for the Teen Age 1998
An annual list of the best new books of the previous year and older titles that are still popular among young adults.

The New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism
This annual award is given to an outstanding journalist whose book has made an impact on public consciousness, events, or policy. The list features this year's finalists' books, as well as those who have won in previous years.
