NYPL Is Going Green — What Can I Do to Help?

Paperless Notices

Did you know that last year, the Library mailed thousands and thousands of paper notices to users? That's hundreds of pounds of paper, or a whole lot of trees!

In an effort to help the environment and to better allocate funding toward new materials, programs, and services, the Library will cease mailing paper notices for hold requests on August 1, 2010. No need to worry, though. We can provide you with these notices by e-mail or telephone. You will receive your notices faster and we'll save money on paper and postage. However, don't wait until August 1 — the sooner you help us make the change, the more good it will do.

To begin receiving notices from the Library via e-mail or telephone, just do the following:

1) Log in to My Account at nypl.org with your library card number and PIN.

2) Find and click on the Change account information link.

3) Choose your new hold notice preference. If you would like to receive notices by e-mail, select that option and make sure you have entered a valid e-mail address. To receive notices by telephone, choose that option. Click Submit to save your change. Then, let a circulation staff member know that you would like to confirm that your telephone number is up to date. It's that easy!

We're Going Green!

In 2009, The New York Public Library introduced its new mission statement. The Library's mission is to:

  • Inspire lifelong learning
  • Advance knowledge
  • Strengthen our communities

Three simple charges that will drive our service to local library users and to the global community in the years to come. Three simple charges that will lend themselves to nurturing library users for generations. To that same end, the Library is looking into new and innovative ways to preserve its resources so that they can be enjoyed for generations. From the opening of the Battery Park City Library, our first green location in Manhattan, to initiatives to conserve trees, water, and energy, The New York Public Library has its eyes on a green and prosperous future.
