Co-Presented by The Metropolitan Opera

As his first large-scale opera,Two Boys, has its U.S. premiere at the Metropolitan Opera, composer Nico Muhly sits down with Ira Glass (host, NPR's "This American Life") for a colorful, wide-ranging conversation about music, life, and whatever piques their interest. The program will include musical illustrations by Muhly on piano.

Nico Muhly has composed a wide scope of work for ensembles, soloists and organizations including the American Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony, countertenor Iestyn Davies, violinist Hilary Hahn, choreographer Benjamin Millepied, New York City Ballet, NewYork Philharmonic, Paris Opéra Ballet, soprano Jessica Rivera, and designer/illustrator Maira Kalman.

Among Muhly’s most frequent collaborators are his colleagues at Bedroom Community, an artist-run label headed by Icelandic musician Valgeir Sigurðsson. Bedroom Community was inaugurated in 2007 with the release of Muhly’s first album, Speaks Volumes. In spring 2012, Bedroom Community released Muhly’s three-part Drones, in collaboration with pianist Bruce Brubaker, violinist Pekka Kuusisto, and violist Nadia Sirota.

Born in Vermont in 1981 and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Muhly graduated from Columbia University with a degree in English Literature. In 2004, he received a Masters in Music from the Juilliard School, where he studied under Christopher Rouse and John Corigliano. His writings and full schedule can be found at www.nicomuhly.com.

Ira Glass is the creator and host of "This American Life,” which is heard each week on more than 500 public radio stations in the United States, Canada and Australia. Most weeks the show is also the most popular podcast in the country. Glass began his career as an intern at National Public Radio's network headquarters in Washington, D.C., in 1978, when he was 19 years old. Over the years, he worked on nearly every NPR network news program and held virtually every production job in NPR's Washington headquarters. He was a tape cutter, newscast writer, desk assistant, editor and producer. He filled in as host of "Talk of the Nation" and "Weekend All Things Considered." Under Glass's direction, "This American Life" has won the highest honors for broadcasting and journalistic excellence. The show has put out its own comic book, three greatest hits compilations, a paint-by-numbers set, a radio decoder toy, whiskey tumblers, temporary tattoos, a television adaptation which ran on Showtime for two seasons and a feature film called "Sleepwalk with Me."
